Lies of Pdle

Boss, weapon or Legion Arm: guess today's enigma. Every guess tears out a fragment of truth.

How to play

How to play the Quote mode

The Quote mode, nicknamed Quotedle, shows a line of dialogue from Lies of P and asks who said it. The answer is one of 16 characters, and the site holds 802 of their lines. Each line appears in the language you are reading the site in, as the game's own translation writes it, so the words are the ones you heard or read in Krat.

How a round works

Read the line, then type a few letters of a character's name in the field below it. Up to eight suggestions appear with a portrait, case and accents don't matter, and both the English name and the name in your language work. Choose with the arrow keys and Enter, or click. A wrong guess joins the list under the field with a cross, and that character leaves the suggestions.

There is no other clue: the line is all you get. With 16 names, you can never need more than 16 guesses, but every wrong name counts in your result, so it pays to think before typing.

How to read a line

Start with the tone. A line that welcomes P, gives a warning, bargains or mocks already says a lot about the speaker's place in the story. Then look for the vocabulary of a trade or an obsession: machines and repairs, Ergo, faith, money, family. Finally, ask yourself when you heard it, because some characters speak from the first hours while others only appear much later.

It also helps to sort the cast into groups. On one side are the residents of Hotel Krat, the refuge you return to between expeditions, such as Geppetto or Eugénie. On the other are the people you meet out in the streets and districts of Krat, and even one of your enemies. The characters page of the codex lists everyone who can be the answer.

How the daily line is chosen

Every day at midnight UTC, the server first draws a character, each of the 16 with the same chance whatever their number of lines, then one of that character's lines. The draw depends on the date and a secret key, and the server checks each guess itself, so the answer never reaches your browser before you find it. The same character can come back within a few days, usually with a different line.

Your guesses are saved in your browser until the reset. The Practice button above the line draws a random character and line as often as you like, and those rounds stay out of your statistics. The Share button copies the character's name with your result, so keep it for people who have already played.

Where the lines come from

The lines are taken from the game files. A line is kept only when two sources agree on who speaks it: the dialogue file it belongs to, and the speaker field filled in by the developers. When they disagree, the line is left out, even if the speaker seems obvious. Lines can come from any point in the story, so if you haven't finished Lies of P, expect the occasional spoiler in this mode. The guide to the world of Lies of P introduces the main characters without spoilers.

Frequently asked questions

Which characters can be the answer?
16 characters, from the residents of Hotel Krat to people met elsewhere in the city. The codex lists all of them.
Is there a clue after a wrong guess?
No. A wrong guess is marked with a cross and removed from the suggestions, but the line stays your only clue.
Is the line translated by the site?
No, each line is shown in the game's own translation, in the twelve languages of Lies of P. Switching the site's language switches the line too.
Are characters with many lines picked more often?
No. The server first picks the character, each with the same chance, then one of their lines.
Can a line spoil the story?
It can. Lines come from the whole game, so the line of the day may come from a late chapter.
